Hotel RL

Did you know there is a hotel in Spokane where almost all the walls are chalkboards?

As you might imagine, in my mind, it’s one of the coolest places ever!

Last summer, I got a call from the Hotel RL (formerly the Red Lion Inn at the Park) in downtown Spokane. Michael, the general manager, was getting ready for the grand re-opening, and he desperately wanted someone to come in and jazz up their blank chalkboard walls.

…um, do you even have to ask?! I was totally in!

…and then I remembered I had a newborn baby. At this point it dawned on me that doing so much work on-site with a three week old might be a little — er — complicated. Mike had never taken care of Annie alone and wasn’t super comfortable with the idea of me being 30 minutes away in case things got really desperate, and I didn’t think asking my husband to sit and watch me decorate chalkboard walls for 8 hours at a time was a reasonable request.

So…thanks to the Baby K’tan, away we went!

I mean, can you even handle that cuteness?

Obviously, Annie quickly became the most popular person around while she sweetly slept away and I went to town on those walls. I used chalkboard art to not only decorate the space, but also to draw attention to their restaurant, lounge, coffee bar, and bicycle rental service station. Looking back on these pictures, I can’t help but laugh a little — now she’s crawling All. Over. The. Place. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t get her to sit still enough in a baby carrier for me to draw a picture, let alone carefully write out all the fun fonts in the photo below!

The end product at the Hotel RL is pretty awesome; the best way I can think to describe it is a Pinterest explosion. It has a super hip, chill vibe. If you’re looking to grab an appetizer or drink with a friend — or even if you want a little weekend getaway — you should definitely check it out. The Hotel RL is located at 303 W. North River Dr., Spokane, WA 99201.

If you’re looking to add chalkboard wall art to your business or home, I’m your girl! Summer is just around the corner, which means this teacher is about to have some serious free time. I currently charge $30/hour for on-site chalkboard art, which I’m told is a pretty smokin’ hot deal. Reach out to me on my Hire page, and let’s get planning!
