Chalk it up to a Good Purchase

November 4, 2015

You guys. The best thing happened a couple weeks ago:

Okay, so that photo probably means basically nothing to anyone but me. Basically, KC, my amazing neighbor, AKA @leavingamarkphoto, tagged me in a comment on this Instagram post. It was love at first sight, I followed @valeriemckeehan (and, subsequently, her other account, @lilyandval), I spent more time than I should admit stalking admiring every gorgeous chalk art picture in her feeds, and the rest is history.

In the midst of said admiring, I noticed a few pictures of a book I had seen online before…and when I suddenly realized the correlation — by Valerie McKeehan, @valeriemckeehan (my husband is probably mentally chiming in with some comment about my “pretty blonde hair” about now!) — I immediately ordered my very own copy of The Complete Book of Chalk Lettering. Thanks, Amazon Prime.

…and the obsession only continued. The second that book showed up in our mailbox, Mike knew I was a goner. Seriously though. This book is full of thorough tutorials alongside stunning photos of McKeehan’s work. Aaaaand…that’s not all! It comes with built-in practice chalkboards. Aaaaaaaaaand…the practice chalkboards fold out so I can practice any tutorial I want while I’m reading! So. Much. Genius. She covers everything from fonts to shading to layout, and everything in between. Life goals.

Essentially, if you love chalkboard art, I 100% recommend purchasing this book. $14.82 well-spent — because, seriously, WHY would anyone buy the $9.99 Kindle version of this book?! No practice chalkboards, people!

At the risk of coming across as totally creepy (too late, you say?), I have to share a little copycat chalkboard I whipped out this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration, Valerie McKeehan — not only are we loving our new dining room art, but we are also feeling inspired to try out a homemade pumpkin pie. Recipe experiment post is coming your way soon!

And mine!

I think it’s safe to say I’m chalking this up to a good purchase.

Happy lettering!
